This initiative, announced by Mark Zuckerberg, co-founder and CEO of Meta, aims to enhance user privacy and streamline interactions. The new username system will operate alongside traditional phone numbers, allowing users to communicate simply by sharing their usernames, similar to platforms like X or Instagram. This change is designed to improve privacy levels and offer more flexibility in user interactions. As WhatsApp prepares for this transition, it emphasizes the exclusivity of usernames, which cannot be reused once assigned. The early reservation process is crucial, especially given the vast user base of over 3 billion people, which can lead to overlapping usernames. A spokesperson for WhatsApp stated, "We are opening up early reservations to ensure everyone has the opportunity to select their preferred username." In addition to the username feature, WhatsApp is also implementing an added security measure known as the 'sending code' feature, which aims to combat spam and unsolicited messages from unknown users. When this feature is activated, any stranger wishing to message you via your username will need to enter a secret code that you must create and share only with trusted contacts. To reserve your username on WhatsApp, users can do so directly through the app available on various devices. The platform sends notifications to select users encouraging them to secure their usernames. The reservation process is straightforward: go to the settings menu in the WhatsApp app, navigate to account settings, and select the option to choose or modify your username. Additionally, users will find settings to manage who can message them, either through their username or by using the sending code. This process remains consistent across both Android and iPhone devices, ensuring ease of access for all users. WhatsApp has also proactively secured usernames for celebrities and government officials to prevent impersonation and fraud, allowing them to communicate directly with support for account management. While the new username feature is being rolled out, traditional phone number communication remains intact and can still be used to connect with users at any time. The new security layer applies only to new conversations, meaning that previous chats established via phone numbers will continue as they were, allowing users to maintain their existing interactions without disruption.
