The V&A Dundee is set to host a remarkable exhibition dedicated to the legendary musician David Bowie, starting on November 4, 2026. This exhibition, titled 'David Bowie: On Tour', will feature a stunning collection that includes over 100 unique items from Bowie's illustrious career. Fans will have the opportunity to see iconic stage costumes, musical instruments, and photographs that have never been on public display before. Among the highlights is the striking clown costume worn by Bowie in the music video for 'Ashes to Ashes', which has become a symbol of his artistic innovation.
In addition to the costume, the exhibition will showcase a variety of memorabilia, including the clapperboard used during the production of 'The Man Who Fell To Earth' and Bowie's first musical instrument, a Grafton Alto saxophone gifted to him by his father in 1961. This saxophone not only marks the beginning of Bowie's musical journey but also represents his profound connection to music from a young age.
Following its debut in Dundee, the exhibition will embark on a two-year tour, making stops in Blackpool, County Durham, Hull, and Bristol. Each location will provide fans with the chance to engage with Bowie's legacy through different lenses. The exhibition is divided into four thematic sections, each exploring various aspects of Bowie's life and career. The first section, 'Bowie Through a Lens', highlights how photography played a crucial role in shaping his public persona, featuring works from notable photographers like Terry O'Neill and Mick Rock.
The second section, 'All the Somebody People', focuses on Bowie's performances across four key eras, including his transformative Ziggy Stardust phase and the Berlin years. The third section, 'Hooked to the Silver Screen', showcases Bowie's cinematic appearances, from music videos to film roles, while the final section, 'I Can't Give Everything Away', delves into his creative process and legacy, featuring personal items like his 1988 British passport and notes from conversations about his archive. This exhibition promises to be a profound tribute to an artist whose influence continues to resonate across generations.
