Inspiring Encounter: Paraplegic Boy Meets Princess of Wales During Charity Challenge
Ted, an 11-year-old from Sutton Coldfield, has made headlines after an unforgettable encounter with Catherine, Princess of Wales, while completing the challenging Three Peaks Challenge. This event involves climbing the highest mountains in England, Scotland, and Wales within a single day. Ted, who is paraplegic, was pushed and carried in his wheelchair by his father, Pete, and a dedicated team of family and friends. Their goal was to raise funds for Molly Ollys, a charity that supports children with life-threatening illnesses. During the trek, Ted and his group were fortunate enough to meet the Princess not once, but three times. Each meeting was a delightful surprise for Ted, who expressed his amazement at encountering royalty in such a rugged setting. "When I realized it was her, I just thought it was amazing and incredible," he shared. His father, Pete, recounted the moment they first met Catherine, noting how taken aback he was when he discovered who they were speaking with. "I was just dumbfounded," he said, reflecting on the joy of that experience. Catherine showed genuine interest in Ted's well-being, asking him if he was warm enough and had enough rest after the first mountain. This motherly gesture left a lasting impression on both Ted and Pete. "She was lovely and very motherly to Ted, asking all the questions a mum would ask," Pete remarked, clearly touched by the Princess's kindness. The Three Peaks Challenge proved to be physically demanding, with the group facing harsh weather conditions, including rain and strong winds. Nevertheless, they managed to complete the challenge in just under 30 hours, exceeding their initial target by 10 minutes. Ted's determination and the support of his group were key factors in their success. The fundraiser for Molly Ollys has now surpassed its goal of £5,000, raising over £11,000, thanks in part to the publicity generated by their encounter with the Princess. Pete expressed hope that their story would inspire other children facing similar challenges, encouraging them to see their potential despite obstacles.
