In a delightful twist, a mural depicting Dot Cotton, a character from the long-running British soap opera Eastenders, has made its debut in the small Welsh village of Pontyates. This mural not only showcases the beloved character, portrayed by the late June Brown, but also highlights a unique historical connection between Brown and the village. During World War II, Brown was evacuated to Pontyates at the age of 12, a fact that surprised many locals when the mural was commissioned.
The mural features Dot Cotton alongside other local symbols, including a dragon, a miner, and a rugby player, making it a vibrant representation of the community. Artist Steve Jenkins, known as Jenks Art, undertook the project after engaging with local schoolchildren who suggested including Dot Cotton in the artwork. Jenkins expressed his surprise at the overwhelming support for the inclusion of the iconic character, stating that it sparked conversations among residents, young and old alike.
As the mural took shape over five days of painting during a recent heatwave, Jenkins found himself reflecting on Brown's legacy and her fond memories of Pontyates. The mural's creation was supported by community fundraising efforts, and it has quickly become a point of interest for both locals and visitors. Rhian Cooper, chairwoman of the village improvement group, noted that while older generations might recall Brown's ties to the area, younger residents are just beginning to learn about this fascinating link.
The unveiling of the mural has not only brightened the village but also served as a reminder of the important role that art and history play in community identity. As residents gather in parks or watch rugby games, they now have a colorful homage to a television legend to admire. The mural stands as a testament to the charm of Pontyates and its unexpected connection to the world of British television, ensuring that Dot Cotton's legacy will continue to resonate within the community for years to come.
