Palestinian Factions Call for Urgent Meeting with President Mahmoud Abbas to Reconsider Election Mechanism
Palestinian factions have recently issued a call to President Mahmoud Abbas, urging him to convene an urgent meeting of the general secretaries of various factions. The aim of this meeting is to initiate a national dialogue and conduct comprehensive elections while establishing a unified strategy to confront the current challenges facing the Palestinian people. This call was made in a joint statement released by several factions, including Hamas, Islamic Jihad, the Palestinian National Initiative, and the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine, among others. The factions emphasized that the temporary unified leadership framework, agreed upon in previous national reconciliation agreements, particularly the recent one in Beijing, represents a transitional national reference capable of leading this phase. They stressed the importance of enhancing national partnership and ensuring the continuity of national institutions based on consensus. In July 2024, these factions had previously announced their agreement on achieving comprehensive national unity that includes all forces within the framework of the Palestine Liberation Organization, and the formation of a temporary national consensus government to manage Palestinian affairs in the West Bank, Gaza Strip, and Jerusalem. In their statement, the factions reiterated that national unity and political partnership are the only options to confront the ongoing genocide and the plans to liquidate the Palestinian cause. They underscored that any steps related to rebuilding and developing Palestinian national institutions must be based on comprehensive national consensus and inclusive dialogue, which strengthens the legitimacy of national institutions and preserves unity among the people. They warned against any attempts to reshape the Palestinian political system in response to external pressures or dictates. The statement further clarified that the true entry point for restoring national unity and renewing the legitimacy of national institutions begins with a call for a comprehensive national dialogue that includes all Palestinian factions, based on the principles of partnership, democracy, and national consensus. The factions called for prioritizing the higher national interest and unifying efforts to confront the dangers targeting Palestinians, including projects of displacement, ethnic cleansing, and the liquidation of national rights.
