Romania Enters Premium Market: Sheep Exported to Algeria by Air

Romania has achieved a significant milestone by completing its first air transport of sheep to Algeria, as announced by the National Sanitary Veterinary and Food Safety Authority (ANSVSA). This historic shipment involved over 4,000 Romanian sheep being delivered via cargo planes, reaching their destination in just two and a half hours. This method of transport is notably faster than traditional maritime shipping, which can take up to eight days. The decision to utilize air transport for live animal imports places Romanian sheep meat in a premium segment, highlighting the quality and efficiency of this new logistics approach. The authorities in Algeria have decided that all sheep imports for the year 2026, including those needed for the Eid al-Adha celebration, will exclusively come from Romania. In the last month alone, Romania has exported over 600,000 sheep to Algeria via maritime transport on specially authorized vessels. Romanian meat is highly regarded in traditional markets that consume lamb, and with a constant overproduction of sheep in Romania, the reduced domestic demand has favored the export of live animals.
